In 2020, cracks and holes in the rock retaining wall and exterior walls revealed that soil was settling beneath part of the building. This caused the exterior stucco and original mud plaster to crack, fall away, and expose the historic adobe walls to potential water damage.

Foundation repairs and retaining wall replacement were completed in 2023–2024, and this summer the parish restored the damaged exterior walls. From 2020 to 2025, total repair costs were slightly over $1 million.

We received $321,000 in grants from the Committee for the Restoration of Mission San Jose, Fremont Bank Foundation, Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, Alameda County, and the California Missions Foundation. Additional funding came from repurposed capital campaign donations and annual Mission anniversary events, including June’s 228th anniversary dinner with Bishop Barber.

We are deeply grateful to our parishioners and donors for helping preserve an important part of California and parish history.
