Parish Staff AutobiographiesMeet our StaffFr. Thi Van Hoang - Pastor
I was born in Hai Duong, North Vietnam, on January 2, 1977. I have two brothers and three sisters, and my parents and siblings are all farmers. My family is Catholic and very active in our local parish. Growing up as an altar boy, I felt an early call to serve our Lord as a priest. After high school, I applied to my home Diocese of Haiphong and was accepted. I was then sent to study in Saigon, South Vietnam, from 1996 to 2003. After college, I initially felt that the priestly vocation was not the right fit for me. I worked as a journalist for “Le Courrier du Vietnam” at the Vietnam News Agency for over a year. I then quit my job after being diagnosed with cancer. During my year of treatment and full recovery, I felt God calling me back to His service. I reapplied to my home Diocese for priestly vocation in August 2006, and was sent to the United States to continue my studies. I studied philosophy for two years at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon. In August 2008, I transferred to St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, California, to study theology. After five years of formation at St. Patrick’s Seminary, I was ordained to the Order of Priesthood on May 18, 2013, by Archbishop Alexander Brunette at the Cathedral of Christ the Light for the Diocese of Oakland. My first assignment as a parochial vicar was at St. Joseph Basilica Parish in Alameda, where I served for three years. In July 2016, I was assigned to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Lorenzo, also as a parochial vicar, for two years. Bishop Barber then called me to be the parochial administrator at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Pittsburg, where I served for seven years, from August 2018 to August 2025. On August 1, 2025, I began my assignment as pastor of the family of St. Joseph. I am delighted and look forward to serving you. Together, we will live out Christ’s mission through works of faith, charity, and mercy. Fr. Garrett McGowan - Parochial VicarI am Father Garrett McGowan, your Parochial Vicar. I am very excited to be joining you. I was ordained this year on May 23 after almost thirteen long years of formation. I still have a long way to go as far as being formed. With God’s grace and your prayers and help I will learn how to be a good priest. It is an honor to be assigned to the Mission, since it is the oldest parish in the Diocese, and to have it as my first assignment is something I find pretty amazing. This parish has more history than anywhere else in the Diocese. What an honor to be here! A bit about myself. I went to seminary at Mount Angel in Oregon from 2013–2017. After that I spent a year at Saint Patrick’s Seminary and then I took a couple of years off. I spent time in a Benedictine monastery in New Mexico, the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. It lives up to its name. There is no city around for hours. It lies in the middle of a canyon in the desert of northern New Mexico. I came back to Saint Patrick’s Seminary and they finally let me out in December of 2025. I work as a chaplain in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. Best ministry I have had. Without a doubt, it has been an eye-opening experience to a side of ministry that too often goes forgotten about, unfortunately. I served four years in the Navy. In that time I drove small boats and worked a bit with the Marine Corps and Navy Construction Battalions (Seabees). I have also worked for Harley-Davidson. Don’t ask me to fix your bikes. I have been out of the industry too long, have not kept up with the latest technology the company has put out, and have not been riding for a few years. I worked at a couple of nightclubs in San Francisco as a bouncer (please don’t ask me for any stories). I enjoy going on long drives, good food, learning about various time periods in history, traveling when I can get the time, pipe smoking, and books by J. R. R. Tolkien. Looking forward to getting to know you all. Peace of Christ be with you all, and I wish blessings for each of you. Looking forward to our journey of faith together. Msgr. Manuel C. Simas - Pastor Emeritus (in residence) Reprinted from: The Catholic Voice ~ October 18, 2010 ~ VOL. 48, NO. 18 by Kevin Wing
Msgr. Manuel Simas first realized he wanted to become a priest while in grammar school. That desire continued to grow during his years at Berkeley High School. “I remember in high school that I expressed my thoughts to a pastor at the time,” he recalled. “But it wasn’t until my third year in college (UC Berkeley) that those thoughts became very strong.”
Msgr. Simas, born in Oakland on August 17, 1933, and affectionately known as “Father Manny” – was four years old when he and his family moved to Berkeley. “I was blessed with a strong faith family,” he says of his parents, Manuel and Angeline. “For me, my parents were a very good example of Christian living.”
Following his graduation from Cal in 1955 with a degree in political Science, Father Simas entered St. Patrick’s Seminary. He was ordained by Bishop Merlin J. Guilfoyle at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco on June 10, 1961.
August 2011 also marks Monsignor’s 21st year as pastor of St. Joseph Parish/Old Mission San Jose in Fremont. Founded in 1797 as the 14th in a chain of 21 California missions stretching from San Diego to Sonoma, St. Joseph/Old Mission San Jose is the oldest parish in the East Bay.
His first assignment was to St. Mary’s Parish, Walnut Creek from June 1961 to February 1967, when he was assigned as associate pastor at St. Felicitas Parish in San Leandro. In 1970 he joined the chancery office of the Oakland Diocese as part of the marriage tribunal, remaining in residence at St. Felicitas until 1971 when he moved to Corpus Christi Church in Piedmont. In 1975, Oakland Bishop Floyd Begin named him Diocesan Director for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, which focuses on the Church’s mission on a global scale. On April 24, 1977, in a ceremony held at Corpus Christi Church, Father Simas became vested as a monsignor in the Oakland Diocese. Two years later he was named pastor of St. John Vianney Parish in Walnut Creek, where he remained until becoming pastor in Fremont in 1990. During his 21 years at St. Joseph, Msgr. Simas has seen much change in the parish community, including a growing diversity and the expansion of ministries.
“I’ve experienced life with people in the parish through good times, through sad times. The community has been there for me as well.” The parish community rallied around the priest recently when his only siblings, sisters Elsie and Marlene, passed away within four months of each other. The most important aspect of Msgr. Simas’ prayer life is the celebration of the Eucharist. “Everything centers around that,” he said, “To gather around the Lord’s table. Everything is there. People, past and present.” But, I still encourage them to follow their heart.” Sr. Kathy Littrell - OCIA & Adult Confirmation CoordinatorSr. Kathy Littrell, SHF has been a member of the Sisters of the Holy Family since 1986 and will be celebrating her 40th Jubilee this Summer.
