The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children grounded in Sacred Scripture, Catholic Doctrine, Liturgy, Prayer and the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori.  Themes are presented in such a way as to develop the religious potential present in every child:  the capacity to love and be loved and be in a deep relationship with God.  

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd takes place in a specially prepared space called an Atrium.  The Atrium contains age-appropriate materials that are simple and essential to the child’s development of a relationship with God.  Each session consists of a presentation of new material, work time and prayer.  

The presentations follow the rhythm of the Church’s liturgical year.  During Advent, we share the stories of Jesus’ birth; in Lent the Last Supper; and in the Easter season, we contemplate the Empty Tomb.  Other presentations include the articles and gestures of the Mass, the geography of the Holy Land, and the signs and symbols of Baptism.  

At the heart of Level I is the Parable of the Good Shepherd, which speaks directly to the young child’s soul.  Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Giobbi found that children are especially drawn to this image of Jesus – the Shepherd who knows each one by name and loves them completely.  This parable is shared often, inviting the children to rest in the quiet joy of being known and loved by God.
