Sacred music is not a luxury—it is at the very heart of our worship at St. Joseph Catholic Church/Mission San José, Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph. Through music, we are drawn more deeply into the mysteries of the Mass, consoled at funerals, uplifted at weddings and quinceañeras, and united in prayer through countless liturgies that fill our parish life.

The Music Ministries Department serves nearly every Mass and sacramental celebration, providing sacred music for select daily Masses, all weekend Masses and liturgies, Holy Days, solemnities, feast days, devotions, reconciliations, baptisms, first communions, confirmations, weddings, quinceañeras, and funerals. This work is carried by a family of choirs and ensembles, including the Adult Parish Choir, Family and Children’s Parish Choir, Bell Choir, and the choirs of our Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Indian communities, as well as our Mission San José Orchestra and smaller chamber ensembles. Together, they form one parish family united in sacred song.

This year, our ministry will also present two extraordinary concerts, freely offered to all:

  • Saturday, September 20, 2025Rosales Opus 14 Organ and Orchestra Concert in the historic Mission San José, showcasing the splendor of our renowned Rosales Opus 14 pipe organ. This treasured instrument—an heirloom of artistry and devotion—will be heard in full majesty together with the Mission San José Orchestra, in a concert that bridges centuries of sacred tradition with the living faith of our parish today.
  • Saturday, December 13, 2025A Parishwide Christmas Concert uniting every choir of St. Joseph—adult, children, youth, bell, and cultural choirs—joined by the Mission San José Orchestra. This glorious concert, celebrating the Nativity of our Lord, will fill our church with the joyous sounds of Christmas, offering an unforgettable expression of faith, hope, and community.

Behind this vibrant ministry are the instruments entrusted to us: the historic Rosales pipe organ in the Mission, the Rodgers Infinity organ in the main church, two grand pianos (one in the Mission, one in the Main Church), a baby grand clavinova, an upright clavinova, and multiple electronic keyboards and Handbell sets. All require regular care, tuning, and upkeep. Preserving them is not simply maintenance—it is stewardship of the sacred voice of our parish.

To sustain this ministry, we are tasked with raising $25,000 in 2025. Your gift will:

  • Preserve and maintain our instruments; organs, pianos, clavinovas, keyboards and bells.
  • Support the choirs, ensembles, and orchestra that serve every liturgy.
  • Provide free training and sacred music formation for children, youth, and adults.
  • Ensure concerts and liturgies remain open and free to all, enriching the parish and wider community.

This sacred work is only possible through the generosity of parishioners, friends, supporters and music lovers. I prayerfully invite you to become an underwriter or to give at the level to which God calls you. Every offering, great or small, will be received with gratitude and used directly to sustain this mission.

Why Your Gift Matters

Sacred music is not entertainment—it is prayer. At St. Joseph Catholic Church/Mission San José, Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph, music is integral to our liturgies, enlivens and uplifts the faithful, and forms the next generation in preserving and enriching our worship for the sole purpose of offering to God our praise through our gift of music.

Entirely volunteer-driven, with only one paid position in the Director of Music Ministries, this department gives thousands of hours each year so that every parishioner may experience the richness of sacred music at no cost. Your gift sustains this legacy.

Your generosity supports:

  • The ongoing care, tuning, and maintenance of all instruments (organs, pianos, clavinovas, keyboards, bells, and the many other instruments in our care that enrich our liturgies and worship).
  • Resources essential to the ministry’s mission, from rehearsals and liturgies to concerts, catechesis, and community engagement.

Every offering—large or small—directly sustains our choirs and ensembles (Adult Parish Choir, Family of Faith, Children’s Choir, Bell Choir, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Indian Choirs, and the Mission San José Orchestra), as well as the continued flourishing of sacred music in our parish.
