The name of the war and its Catholic martyrs aren’t well known, and generations of silence about the war was reportedly intentional, by decree of the Mexican government at the time. But the relics of these martyrs, known as the Cristeros, tell a story. That story of devout faith in the face of the cutting off of their religious rights and their very lives will be told loud and clear this August at Mission San Jose, Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph.

The month marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Cristero War, one fought in Mexico from 1926 to 1929 between the government led by Plutarco Elías Calles and Catholics whom he persecuted in many ways, both during and after the war. The relics of numerous Cristeros will be available for the public to encounter at Mission San Jose.
