Painted Leather Chest

In a publication entitled “Mission Vestments” by Aileen Ryan Earnest (1975), it is noted that trunks of painted leather over camphor wood and trimmed with brass are referenced “in the correspondence of Fr. Junipero Serra, in use as a temporary storehouse for sacred vessels and vestments, until the cajónes or chest of drawers were built for the sacristy.”

This was donated by James Starkovich, Architect.  He used to work with Gil Sanchez who was the lead architect for the reconstruction of the Mission Church back in the 1980s.
