La Misión de Nuestro Padre San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores)![]() The sixth Franciscan Mission was named after St. Francis of Assisi. The son of a wealthy merchant was born at Assisi, Italy, in the year 1182. After a youth spent in seeking pleasure, he left his home and in 1209 founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans). St. Francis is the most famous example of the stigmata of the Passion of Christ appearing on the body. The wonderful custom of setting up the Christmas crib was started by Francis in 1223. This famous saint, whose love for God’s creatures knew no limits, died in 1226. He was canonized in 1228. His Feast Day is October 4. Saint Francis of Assisi Better known as Mission Dolores from its location on the inlet Laguna de Nuestra Senora de Los Dolores, Lagoon of Our Lady of Sorrows, the site for the 6th mission was selected June 29, 1776 by Francisco Palou. Named for St. Francis of Assisi, the formal opening of the mission was October 8th. On this day the bay was also given its name in honor of the founder of the Franciscan Order. Surviving the earthquake of 1906, the Mission remains the oldest building in San Francisco and looks much as it did at completion in 1791.
