A Look Back at the 225

As the Mission’s 225th Anniversary Year draws to a close, we pay one final tribute to La Misión del Gloriosisimo Patriarca San José, the fourteenth of the twenty-one California Missions and the first Catholic Church in what is now the Diocese of Oakland. It was a year that united Saint Joseph Parish/Old Mission San Jose with the Ohlone people, the Mission San Jose community, and the city of Fremont. Let us continue to honor those whose lives have shaped our rich heritage: the indigenous inhabitants of the land…the Ohlone, Spanish missionaries who brought the Catholic faith, people from Mexico who transformed mission lands into ranchos, immigrants from all over the world, and Americans leading the way to California statehood.

Our year-long commemoration, including Bishop Barber’s Anniversary Mass, lectures, concerts, walking tours, exhibits, art contest, and festival, required the dedication and collaboration of countless volunteers. To all who have contributed their time or treasure to mark this Jubilee year, we are eternally grateful!
